iZombie

Braaaaainsy news, friends!

shomi is awesome, and they’re the exclusive SVOD home of the equally-awesome series iZombie – so in celebration, I’m teaming up with shomi to teach you all about how to survive among your totally human friends and neighbours once you’ve joined the ranks of the undead. We all know the zombie apocalypse is inevitable, so you might as well be prepared, right?

In case you haven’t been watching it (and why not?), iZombie comes to us from the totally-intact brain of Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, loosely based on the Vertigo comic of the same name. It follows Rose McIver as the witty and wonderful Liv Moore, who accidentally finds herself zombified and unable to connect to her old life (including her job and fiancé, which obviously sucks). Drenching her brains in hot sauce, Liv discovers that her afterlife isn’t without surprises – like absorbing the memories of whomever she just snacked on. That’ll kinda mess a girl up. But she’s doing her best, you know?

So join me over the next few weeks as I teach you everything you need to know about how to survive life in a world where temptation is all around you (braaaaaains) and you just want to fit in (though you would also like some braaaaaaaains). You can follow along on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtags #TheZombiesGuide and #shomi!

Braaaaaaaains,

Sam

Hello geek girls of Toronto (and the surrounding area!)

I’m shooting a book trailer for The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, and I need your help to make it amazing!!

Here’s the idea: we want to shoot a bunch of Toronto’s awesomest fangirl ladies (that’s you!) saying different lines from The Geek Girl’s Litany for Feminism while in some sort of cosplay. Pretty rad, right?

All you have to do is show up at our studio on Sunday, March 22nd any time between 1pm and 6pm – and we’ll have enough pizza for everyone (yay!). If you could bring your favorite costume, that would be amazing – but if you’ve never dressed up before, we’ll have a few pieces on hand to whip something up for you.

It’s going to be shot by Spencer Barclay, the same fellow who did this amazing trailer for Chris Hadfield’s An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, and he’s a big geek feminist himself, so we’re in good hands.

I know it’s the same weekend as Toronto ComiCon, but I’m hopeful that if you’re hitting up the con you could just swing by the shoot after!

So, DETAILS:

Where: TBA
When: Sunday, March 22nd, any time between 1pm and 6pm
What to bring: Yourself, all your friends, your favorite cosplay
RSVP: On Facebook

If you want to practice a little bit beforehand, here’s the manifesto in full! Don’t worry – we’ll have cue cards on the day to remind you of your lines 🙂

I am a fangirl and I am a feminist.

I embrace the word “fangirl” with open arms.

I don’t have to prove my nerd cred to anyone,

Ever.

Whether I’m a comics noob,

Or a fic writer typing up her next chapter,

Or a hardcore gamer who sometimes forgets to sleep…

…not that I would ever do that…

No one gets to decide whether I do or do not belong.

From SuperWhoLock to Shakarian,

I accept all fandoms and ships

As equally meaningful and important

In our geek girl lives.

Even if your OTP is my NOTP,

I will still like you.

Though I may have to unfollow your blog.

I will support empowering, lady-created media

And amazing female characters

Who make me feel like I could be Batgirl

If I just had some yellow Doc Martens

and a vigilante complex.

I’m the doctor, not a companion

Buffy, not Bella

So mark March 22nd down in your books, Fangirls, and I hope to see you there!!

New_York_Comic_Con_logo.svg_

Hey wonderful nerd people! I’m going to New York Comic Con this week, and I’m going to be doing some things there. I would love to see you, so it would be rad if you could come and say hi! Here’s what I’ll be doing all week and where you can find me. Let’s be friends!

On Thursday, October 9th at 8pm, come to the Waystation in Brooklyn (yes, that’s the bar with a TARDIS!) for a Doctor Who Trivia and Costume Contest! Hosted by Chris Cummins and part of NY Super Week, I’ll be judging the costume contest portion of the evening, and can grab some fantastic (get it?) prizes. And you better believe I’ll be participating in the trivia, too. Who wants to be on my team?

My book, The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, isn’t out until spring, but in anticipation (and because they’re awesome) Quirk Books have printed up this incredible poster of one portion of the book: The Geek Girl’s Litany for Feminism. (Click it to embiggen!)

Fangirls PosterIf you want to grab one of these fab feminist manifestos, I’ll signing copies twice on Saturday!

11:00am at the Quirk Books booth (#2236) – where I will be joined by the brilliant and talented Eric Smith, author of The Geek’s Guide to Dating

3:00pm at The Mary Sue’s Geek Girl Headquarters (Room 1E02) – preceded by Kelly Sue DeConnick, followed by G. Willow Wilson (I KNOW)

Can’t make it to NYCC but still want a poster? Enter Quirk Books’ NYCC giveaway right here!

Additionally on Saturday, from 1:15 to 2:00pm in room 1A01, I’ll be speaking on The Mary Sue Presents – Strong Female Characters: The Women Shining in Geek Media. Here’s the official description of the panel:

We often ask to see “strong female characters” in our geek media and are critical when Creators fall short but this Panel will focus on the positive representations of women, both as they exist now and as they’ve evolved over time and those creating them. We’ll also be discussing the impact positive representations had on the lives of the Panelists and their hopes for characters we’ll see in the future.

The Mary Sue isn’t hosting an official party this year, but we are having an informal meet-up on Saturday night! Come out to the Pioneers Bar (138 W 29th St.) at 9pm. We will be there! Also $4 drinks! Yes!

Additionally, I’ll be hanging around Geek Girl HQ on and off over the course of the weekend (specifically Friday 3-pm and Sunday 11-12pm), and I’ll be sure to tweet whenever I’m there. For a full list of awesome things we have going in in GGHQ (including wifi, charging stations, a Quirk and Boom! reading corner, and awesome programming), head over here. Yay!

Basically, TL;DR:

  • Thursday, 8pm: Doctor Who Trivia and Costume Contest, at the Waystation
  • Friday, 3-5pm: Geek Girl HQ
  • Saturday, 11am: Poster signing at Quirk Books booth #2236
  • Saturday, 1:15pm: Strong Female Characters panel, room 1A01
  • Saturday, 3pm: Poster signing at Geek Girl HQ, room 1E02
  • Saturday, 9pm: The Mary Sue meet-up, Pioneers Bar
  • Sunday, 11-12pm: Geek Girl HQ

Hope to see you there!
